Giovanni Battista Piranesi —————————Prison Series, Etching, 1745
“the complicated, dreary spaces of the dungeon act as a metaphor for the
darker, twisted side of the human mind. The fantastic gloominess of this
prison is pervaded by hopelessness and a lack of meaning, and exit seems
impossible. Small humans are dwarfed as they move through the
oppressive space. These complex, dark chambers are the exact opposite of
sunny landscapes, but each can be seen as a metaphor for a human state of
mind.
